How to Actually See Vivid 2026

As the winter chill begins to settle over the harbour, the city prepares for its most spectacular transformation of the year. Vivid Sydney 2026 is returning for its 16th year, and it’s shaping up to be the most ambitious edition yet. From May 22 to June 13, the CBD will ignite with a 23-night program that blends high-tech art, live music, and world-class culinary experiences.

Whether you're looking for free things to do in Sydney or planning a high-end winter itinerary, this year’s festival introduces an exciting first: Daytime programming. For the first time, you can experience large-scale public art and "Midweek Minds" talks well before the sun goes down, making it easier than ever to bring the family along.

Where is Vivid Sydney 2026?

The festival’s pulse beats strongest along the Vivid Light Walk, which has been streamlined into a continuous 6.5km route. You can start your journey at Circular Quay and weave through the historic alleyways of The Rocks, before following the waterfront through Barangaroo and ending at the high-energy hub of Darling Harbour.

Top 5 Must-See Light Installations

With 43 installations and projections to choose from, these are the best photo spots and immersive experiences you absolutely cannot miss:

  1. Lighting of the Sails: Opera Mundi (Sydney Opera House): The festival's crown jewel features a new commission by French artist Yann Nguema. This projection transforms the sails into a living tribute to the natural forces that inspired architect Jørn Utzon. It is a must-see on any Sydney sightseeing tour.

  1. Molecule of Light (Barangaroo Reserve): Standing at a staggering 23 metres, this is the tallest installation in Vivid history. Created by British artist Chris Levine, it uses single-frequency laser beams and a "healing" soundscape to create a meditative, otherworldly atmosphere in the heart of the reserve.

  2. Star-Bound: The Vivid Drone Show (Darling Harbour): Back by popular demand with a massive 22-show season, this drone show is a blockbuster. Watch hundreds of synchronised drones create 3D celestial stories above the water. It’s one of the most popular family-friendly activities this year.

  3. Obstacle (Wulugul Walk): Stretching 45 metres along the Barangaroo waterfront, this is one of the longest LED installations ever staged. It creates a pulsing corridor of shifting light and colour that responds to the city's rhythm, making for an incredibly immersive art experience.

  4. Laser Lightfall (Cockle Bay): This is Australia’s most ambitious free outdoor laser spectacular. Choreographed beams of light sweep across the sky and interact with the harbour waters, turning the entire bay into a high-energy dance of light and sound.

Beyond the Lights: Food and Minds

If you're a foodie, the Vivid Fire Kitchen has moved to a new home at Barangaroo Reserve, featuring global pitmasters cooking over open flames. For those seeking intellectual stimulation, the Vivid Minds series features global icons like filmmaker Chloé Zhao and author Roxane Gay in exclusive conversations.Vivid
